As I am writing this blog, I am three days away from starting my first full time job, and when you’re reading this I may already be working. This past week many thoughts have been going through my head. One of them being that this was the last three weeks of formal “summer vacation” I get. I’m so used to getting the whole summer off that going down to two weeks a years is going to be quite the change. I tried my best to take the most out of these last few weeks. I knew that I wanted to a little bit of traveling before I started work, so me and some of my closest GCM friends booked a last minute trip to Punta Cana. It was just what I needed for jamming four months of summer into one week, and it was great to get some relaxation in after a busy school year. Also this past week I got the email saying I was approved to graduate, which seemed like a fitting way to end my mini three week summer vacation. It was actually a huge sigh of relief, I was scared I screwed up somewhere and would have to go back for another credit.
Another thing I have been thinking about is that starting full-time work is definitely one of the biggest milestones thus far in my life, and one that has been a very long time in the making. For as long as I can remember people have been asking me what I wanted to be when I grew up. It weird to think that I have reached the point where I am going to be starting my first full-time career and enter the “real world”. Like most people, my answer to the question of what I wanted to do when I grew up has changed dramatically during the years. If you asked 5 year old me, I would have told you I wanted to be a Major League Baseball player. However, I quickly found out that I lack the athletic ability to play sports for a living (my biggest athletic moment probably came 2 years ago when my team won the dodgeball intramural championship, not quite at a major league level).
Around high school I started saying I wanted to be a graphic designer, which turned into working somewhere in the printing industry when I started studying GCM at Ryerson. I am very excited, and of course nervous, to be starting a full time job in the printing industry this week. Its one thing to learn about something in school, and I have some experience working in the printing industry from my internship last year, but I look forward to learning even more about his industry and applying what I learned in school to real world situations. Also, even though I am not going to become the next baseball star, I still have a passion for sports and I still want to be involved in this area. This is one of the main reasons I decided to work at the MAC as a Promotional Marketing Team Member for the Ryerson Rams this past school year, and why I choose to be a Volunteer for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am games.
It may seem like I have everything planned out, but I don’t. Although I think I have what I’m going to do in the short term planned out, like many I really don’t know what I’m going to be doing in the long term, like where I will be working and what I will be doing in 10-20 years. But I am completely OK with that. I am ready to go with the flow and see where life takes me.
