NOLAN BLANCHARD

Windsor, Ontario | Creative Industries

I wanted to introduce myself in some sort of interesting way but my ideas were sub par…For example, I had this idea to collect random quotes about me from people that already knew me (relatives, friends, mortal enemies and so on) and put it here, but my mom shortly pointed out that that was very narcissistic. Thus you get some random trivia all about me! I hope all you Torontonians cut me some slack for not being a Leafs fan. I tried once before I eventually gave up. Shout out to all those Toronto fans that stick with it. Your loyalty is to be admired.

So, as listed above, I am going to be a student in the Creative Industries program. I am hailing from Windsor, Ontario – about 4 hours south of the Toronto area. For all those who haven’t been, Windsor is a small city across from Detroit, Michigan. We are infamous for that one phallic shrubbery incident that happened on our riverfront…If you haven’t seen it on Jimmy Kimmel, you should. It is our greatest achievement down here.

Moving away is going to be a huge change for me, as it is will be for many of you and one that I am looking forward to immensely, as I hope you all are as well. I knew for a long time that I wanted to move to Toronto. Some years ago, I was browsing through the programs on the Ryerson website and I saw one and I instantly knew that was what I wanted to do. I was nearly 100% sure that this was the path that was destined for me. But it wasn’t Creative Industries. It was actually Fashion Communications. I ended up telling everyone I knew that I was going into Fashion. Lo and behold a few months later I changed my mind (I am fickle indeed). Despite this, I was dead set on going to Ryerson. Finally I discovered the Creative Industries program and I knew, for real this time, that that was what I was going into. It really is a dream program for me and that is a large part of the reason I am so thrilled to move into residence in August. There are going to be some great times ahead starting with #RUrise2014 which not only has the coolest name ever for a frosh week but also seems to have some amazing events lined up. Additionally, it gives us all the chance to meet and take a step into the #ramily where we will be for the four years to come and beyond.

Before then however, we have just under 4 weeks to spend at home with our family and friends. I will be working full time at the public library and playing lots of video games in the evenings. Throw in some concerts, late nights and bittersweet gatherings of family and friends, the #RoadToRyerson is sure to be a cherished and memorable experience. I can’t wait to share more of my journey as we get closer and closer to the beginning of the school year.
