Tim Muttoo, a Ryerson chemical engineering graduate co-founded H2O 4 ALL, a non-profit organization that builds water-treatment systems in developing countries. Accompanied by his team of Ryerson engineering co-op students, and volunteers, the group completes projects in some of the most poverty stricken areas in the world. Actively involved with the Tri-Mentoring Program at Ryerson, H2O 4 ALL demonstrates the capabilities of Ryerson alumni, and students!
What Are We Doing?
Project: Safe Water for Uganda
#Kawolo2014
In August 2014, a team of Ryerson engineering students, alumni and volunteers are travelling to Uganda, East Africa to work on a massive water project.
Kawolo Hospital aids over 400 patients a day; however, the operating ward of the hospital has no access to safe running water. Located East of Kampala, this 112-bed hospital services a community of 1,000,000 people each year. In fact, mothers have to bring in their own Jerry cans of water to service their own deliveries.
How Are We Doing It?
- Borehole wells to access groundwater.
- Piping systems to transport water into the hospital.
- Solar high-pressure lift pumps to transport the water to surface level.
- Solar panels to provide sustainable power to the system.
- Sanitation systems.
- Four 10,000-liter storage tanks.
What Have We Done Already?
With the support of its volunteers, sponsors and partners, H2O 4 ALL has launched 40 projects over five years. The projects provide water to over 200,000 people worldwide and food for 2,000 people per month.
The team has completed projects in the following countries:
- Colombia
- Dominican Republic
- Ghana
- Haiti
- Liberia
- Nigeria
- Sierra Leone
- Uganda
- Zambia
