Online Learning and Resources during COVID-19 school shutdown: What You Need to Know

It feels like the whole world is talking right now. There’s a lot going on and it can be information overload. We went through several news releases from the university and put all the free online resources that are available to Ryerson students. We also compiled a list of other external resources that might be helpful during this weird time! 

Remember that the whole world is going through this pandemic with you, and it’s normal to feel disoriented. Our normal routines have been disrupted and we’re scrambling trying to navigate the new norm for the time being—online classes, video meetings with our bosses and extended time in our homes may not be things we’re used to. We’re in it with you. 

Ryerson-specific resources

Student Learning Support (SLS)

SLS is offering writing, math, English language and study skills appointments online. Their workshops have also moved online; they’ll host them via Google Hangouts or Zoom and you’ll get a link to join when you register. 

The SLC 4th floor reception is closed, so you can book an appointment or get in touch with them at sls@ryerson.ca.

Library research help

Research help with librarians is now available online if you need help with essays and projects.

Ryerson Career & Co-Op Centre 

Still need career advice and help? Ryerson’s Career & Co-Op Centre is still running remotely and virtually. The centre is offering their resume, cover letter and career advising appointments online.

Centre for Student Development and Counselling

Although the centre has closed the onsite location they will be moving to a virtual support system for current clients. Other mental health resources include:

Questions about exams, medical notes and more on-campus information

Ryerson recently created a separate tab on their website to address a number of questions students may have including: academic accommodations, convocation, international student support and more. 

The university is expected to update the site as more information becomes available.

Keeping up with COVID-19 coverage

Many publications have brought down their paywall on their COVID-19 coverage so that everyone can stay up to date with the pandemic and what’s happening:

At-home festivities

  •  “Netflix Party” — this chrome extension allows you to watch Netflix remotely with others. If you’re feeling lonely, this is a perfect way to recreate your usual movie nights with your friends. Student Life and Learning Support are hosting Mid-Day Movies every day—join in 12 p.m. to  2 p.m.  Follow @RUStudentLife on Instagram and Twitter to get the daily links to join the movies.
  • Zoom and Discord — we may not be able to hang out at bars or coffee shops, but luckily with apps like Zoom, you and your friends or family members can have your own little virtual party.

Learning during self-distancing

  • Want to work on your portfolio or keep practicing your design work? Try Goodbrief.io to create a fake “brief” to practice with! Share what you come up with, we want to see!
  • Lynda — start your one month free trial for any online courses and classes you may have always wanted to take but never had the opportunity to
  • Skillshare — similar to Lynda, Skillshare is offering a two month free trial for all your new skill-adopting needs

Keeping active at home

You may not have access to gyms but multiple fitness instructors are offering tips online and doing live workouts for folks during self-isolation. 

  • Nike Training Club app — workouts for every part of your body, beginner to expert! 
  • Planet Fitness Canada is offering free training classes every day via Facebook at 7 p.m.
  • Peloton app — offering free 90-day trials for at-home workouts and fitness classes
  • Social media fitness gurus—creep on Twitter and Instagram to find workout videos to follow both professionals and every day people on how they are staying healthy

Keeping well at home

  • Thriving in Action Online is a library of wellness resources for you to explore at your own pace. Check it out for self check-ins, like reflections and guided meditations, to help maintain your wellbeing. 
  • Yale University is offering people to audit a course called “The Science of Well-Being” for free. The course has different challenges designed to increase your happiness and productivity!
