Meet Nida Shaikh | #RoadToRyerson

“Try to be like a turtle – at ease in your own shell” – Bill Copeland

Hey everyone!

My name is Nida Shaikh and I’ll be 1 of 6 bloggers for #RoadToRyerson. I’m 18 years old and I’m from Brampton, Ontario. I’ll be attending Ryerson University this fall for Biomedical Sciences (and I’m thinking of doing a Film Studies minor too).

Now you may be wondering why did she use that quote?! Since I first stumbled upon that quote, the meaning has always stuck with me. You should be comfortable and at ease with yourself. From someone who hasn’t always been so confident with herself, these words stick with me. If I can accept who I am, why should I worry about what others think? I’ve had wonderful friends who have helped me learn that.

Apparently 80% of Ryerson students commute [Editor’s note: 94% of students live off campus by our last survey], and it looks like I’ll be one of many. I know right now that it is going to be a chore, especially during the winter. I’m getting the chills just thinking about it! But I shall persevere (hopefully!).

Moving on to other things,

In high school, I was part of extra-curriculars, such as being a school Ambassador for four years. As an ambassador I had the opportunity to be able to help setup and actually be at all the events that took place. It meant putting myself out there and interacting with fellow students and community members, so it was a great experience. I was also part of my schools environmental club, EcoSquad. I made many new friends there and this year we managed to get a water bottle refill station installed! I was also part of the school newspaper for a brief time, mostly writing reviews on movies and books.

Outside of school, I was able to volunteer with an organization that focused on youth safety. They taught us so many things and we had the opportunities to help out with local events in the community. I also got the chance to become a part of the teen council at my local library, where we helped plan events that would appeal to youth and helped promote the library itself.

Almost everyone who knows me knows that I’m a bookworm and a huge Harry Potter fan! Maybe one day I’ll actually get to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter or maybe even meet a member of the cast!! One can hope right? For the past two years, I’ve participated in Brampton Library’s Teen Summer Reading Challenge, and I’ve managed to finish in the top 5 twice! I’m participating this year as well and hope to finish in the top 5 again (fingers crossed!), as this will be my last year participating.

I’m also an avid TV watcher. My favourites being:

  • The Originals
  • The Flash
  • White Collar
  • Agents of Shield
  • Daredevil
  • The 100
  • How To Get Away With Murder
  • Teen Wolf

I’m really looking forward to coming to Ryerson University & I can’t wait to meet everyone. I won’t lie, I am a little nervous, but I mean who isn’t when they’re about to start a new chapter in their life? Nonetheless, here I am right now on the #RoadToRyerson and I can’t wait to tell you guys all about it!

Thanks for reading! *hands you virtual chocolate chip cookies*
