If there’s one thing I like, it’s sprucing up my home. For some reason it brings me a little bit of a thrill to add a little functionality, a little more character.
However, this isn’t always the easiest thing to do when you have a budget; even worse when all the cool stuff seems to come with a higher price tag. There’s an answer though, and thankfully, it comes from Sweden.
IKEA is an awesome store, albeit a little far from Ryerson. If you can get out there (I recommend TTC, or a friend with a car), you can actually get a bunch of stuff for less than you’d think. Sure, the materials are a little shoddy, but there’s some ways of making things last. IKEA Hackers is one of my favourite blogs for getting more out of what you buy, for good reason: it’s making things out of other things you can already buy at IKEA.
Instead of spending $300 on a standing desk, why not save a hundred bucks and make it out of shelving, or make a bar table out of a bookcase? You often get the added benefit of more storage space, and since the store’s furniture tends to fit a theme, it’s easy to mix and match.
I’m definitely a fan of making something out of “nothing”, so give this blog a shot!
