It’s not exactly a well-kept secret that I’m pretty nerdy; heck, I even dressed up as a Tetris block for Halloween. However, I’ve only really started to get my feet wet in one of the most fun aspects of nerdery: role-playing games.
Alright, alright, don’t be scared off: this isn’t the type of gamer you’re used to seeing stereotyped. They bathe, they can be social, and like you, they’re just looking to have a good time. RPGs are a great way to get out of your comfort zone and learn how to craft what is a truly dynamic narrative. English majors, take note.
The Ryerson ARRG (Association Of Ryerson Role-Players and Gamers) has the distinction of having one of the best acronyms for a student group ever, and they host a number of events weekly. There’s a variety, which serves to account for differing tastes: I mean, not everyone likes dwarves-and-elves fantasy when there are futuristic settings to be explored.
But perhaps I’m getting ahead of myself.
The point I’m trying to make with this post is that being a nerd doesn’t mean that you’re chained to a computer in your basement, venturing out into the sun for NOS energy drinks and Cheetos. RPGs, tabletop gaming and other clubs are a great way to meet people you have things in common with, and really, the sensation of rolling your first “natural” 20 on a 20-sided die is not one to be experienced alone.
