There are a lot of great things close to Ryerson’s campus. So many, that sometimes it’s hard to keep track.
I thought it would be helpful to let you guys know a few of the sweet food hotspots close by that won’t necessarily drain your wallets but will likely satisfy your stomachs. If there’s one thing I love, it’s food and I’m sure by the end of the year you will be all too familiar with these places anyways… So here we GO!
Kyoto House – 143 Dundas St. West (Between Bay and University)
Okay, so this place isn’t really “around the corner” from Ryerson’s main campus, but it’s just a block away from the Ted Rogers School of Management so it totally counts. Now, it’s not exactly the greatest all-you-can-eat sushi place downtown (I think that accolade goes to Aji Sai), but for $11.99 during lunchtime hours, it’s pretty darn good.
Panera Bread – 322 Yonge St. (Corner of Edward)
A bit of a story behind this one: I lived in Chicago during the summer of 2008 and right next to my building was a Panera Bread (as well as a neat place called Epic Burger). Let’s just say I ended up spending a lot of meals there. And obviously, the moment I found out one opened up right by Ryerson, I almost had to change my pants. Anything bread-related at Panera (pastries, soups in bread bowls, sandwiches etc.) is unreal and definitely worth the price. Try to Chipotle Chicken Panini – you will be salivating for days.
Marble Slab – 330 Yonge St.
Who can say no to ice cream? I know I can’t, especially on a warm day. I often find myself screaming for ice cream and then heading over to Marble Slab for a treat; with flavours like Red Velvet and Birthday Cake, how could I resist?! If you don’t know how it works, you basically order ice cream and then choose from a variety of toppings which they can then “mix-in” to your order. Pretty great and it’s right at the entrance to Gould st. so you don’t have to walk very far to get there.
Salad King – 340 Yonge St.
‘Nuff said.
The Big Slice – 385 Yonge St.
Pizza is a safe bet for any meal, but with a Pizza Pizza and a Mama’s Pizza just across the street, there are a lot of options to choose from. However, The Big Slice really lives up to its name by giving you slices literally as big as your head. For $5 you can get a slice and a pop, so the prices are pretty student-friendly too. It’s also open until 5AM… So do what you will with that information. 😉
Lou Dawgs – 76 Gerrard St. East (Right by Neil Wycik)
This location just opened up recently and it serves a lot of great southern food. Pulled pork, beef brisket, wicked wings and ribs, Lou Dawgs has it all. If you’re gonna try anything, check out the side menu and order the Jalapeno Cheddar Corn Muffin: it’s probably my favourite thing of all time (sweet, spicy, savoury ughhh). Open until 4AM on the weekends, and the people that work there are super chill.
Smoke’s Poutinerie – 203 Dundas St. East
Poutines on poutines! What more do you need? There are like a million types of poutines on the menu, but I especially like the Nacho Grande. This place also sells Calypso drinks (which aren’t that common to find), so I recommend grabbing one of those with your meal. Smoke’s is a little bit more of a walk compared to the rest, but it’s worth the exercise since you’ll soon be clogging up your arteries. It’s also open decently late, especially on the weekends, so don’t worry about getting your late night poutine fix!
