There’s a certain je ne sais quoi about attending your first spirit event of the Orientation season: everyone’s overflowing with energy. It could be because they’re finally moved back to the city, or here for the first time. It could be because of the desire to egg some new, shy students on, or in Wednesday’s case, some really good basketball.
Ryerson celebrated its first Blue and Gold Day with some basketball against the George Brown Huskies. The gym was packed with students flaunting Rams gear, and multiple sponsors were on hand with a staple of Orientation life: free stuff. The crowd was boisterous and enthusiastic – or maybe it just sounded that way because I was sitting in front of the Student Life blog’s own John Mayo; just a warning, that man has a set of pipes, and isn’t afraid to use them to heckle the other team (much love, man).
All in all, the game was a really fun time. The Rams pulled out a convincing win, and there was many a good time to be had. Highlights include a monster dunk by the Rams’ Jelane Pryce (which is making its rounds on Youtube) and the antics of our own lovable mascot, Eggy.
Hopefully the gents on the basketball team will be able to keep up the momentum this coming season; however, for now the glow of a win was just the kickstart orientation needed.
