Get seasonal with Health Promotion recipe contest

Commuter students across campus are in happier mood, at least I am. The sun is actually out when we wake up in the early morning to catch TTC buses and GO trains these days. But while spring is fast approaching, Ryerson’s Health Promotion team wants us to take a look back at our favourite winter recipes for their Good Earth Cooking Contest.

The contest asks students to submit winter recipes that use seasonal ingredients.

The goal is to encourage students to consider using fresh ingredients in their diet, whether it’s spring, summer, fall or winter. The winning recipe will be scored on originality, ease of preparation and the use of at least one seasonal ingredient.

First prize includes a $75 Whole Foods Market gift certificate.

Heather Lush, Ryerson’s Health Promoter, says that eating locally makes for more healthy food. “We know what is in our food – whether it’s organic, how far it has traveled (as traveling does take a toll on the amount of nutrients in food), and whether it is genetically modified (and how this might affect our health),” she wrote in an email.

Seasonal ingredients are foods that have been grown either in their regular growing season, and then stored in cold storage facilities, or grown in hot houses locally during the winter months. Seasonal ingredients during the winter include sweet potatoes, pears, mushrooms, potatoes, garlic, cabbage and carrots, among others.

To enter in the contest, send your original winter recipe to eatwell@ryerson.ca or submit a hard copy to the Health Promotion’s office at POD 448. Click for more information and submission requirements. The contest ends March 25, 2011 at 4 p.m.
